English settlers and the Indians
The first English colonists were indebted to the local Indian tribes. The settlers chose to make peace with the Native Americans – it was their only way to survive. The Indians gave the settlers maize for food and for the cultivation, learned to fish, hunt, and association with one of the tribe was saving them from destruction by other tribes. However, getting increase in the size (due to new arrivals from European colonists), the settlers began to organize a new colony and afflict Aboriginal neighbors, what led to the beginning of the clashes. The first war between British colonists and the Indians began in 1622 and lasted to 1637 Algonquin led Opekankanafa perturbed by the behavior of aliens attacked them in 1622, the British settlement of Jamestown, where they captured leader of immigrants – Captain John Smith. But having received assurances from the prisoner in changing attitudes to the Indians, the winners let him go. Smith took refuge in New Plymouth, and immediately organized a war against the natives. Each year, the colonists carried out by three campaigns against the Indians until he pushed them away from their settlements. Even after 50 years was no talk about the unions. The first clashes with the tribe Pequot resulted in Pequot War (1637), which resulted in the extermination of the tribe. A little later, the great leader of the Wampanoag tribe Metacom, or King Philip, led a fierce struggle with the white settlers of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut (1675-1676). White colonists mercilessly massacred entire Indian villages, without leaving alive even women and children. That war marked a scenario that has been repeated over and over again. First, the white came to the Indians as guests behaved like friends, traded. Then they started to build their cities and, emboldened, went further and further into the Indian lands, capturing the best plots. Those Indians who tried to resist, usually found themselves in the face of the enemy, more numerous and better armed. And in the final usually followed either accept or perish. English colonists needed the land, and they quickly settled on the lands of the Indians. The island of Manhattan was purchased from the Indians for a couple of bundles of beads. It was, in fact, a rip-off. “Land Rush” – so named this disease R. Williams, one of the few settlers who tried to establish fair and mutually beneficial relations with neighboring Indian tribes. The same view was taken by William Penn (owner of the colony of Pennsylvania).
The Indian population was not able to block the path of the Europeans. During the long years of struggle by all means at the disposal of the Europeans colonizers – and superior weaponry, and economic superiority, and the best organization and the treacherous politics and diplomacy – have been brought to bear against the Indians. Before the arrival of Europeans American Indian tribes did not know alcohol. The Spanish, the French, the British were not only preaching Christianity among the Indian “heathen”, but with even greater urgency spread whiskey and rum. Only after 100 years was finally broken up armed resistance of Indian tribes, and the remains of them, divided into smaller groups, disarmed, were finally herded into reservations – strictly limited areas intended for living groups of Indians.
As for me, I believe that the security of indigenous people is very important. As though there was in the past, today we have to respect those whose ancestors lived on this area.
